Battling Against Aging

May 4, 2010

When we were younger, we can’t wait to grow up. We can’t wait to learn how to eat, walk and talk when we were babies. We can’t wait to go to kindergarten when we were toddlers. We can’t wait to hit 18 when we’re in high school. We can’t wait to hit 21 to get the key. We’re so busy thinking about growing up that we totally neglect our current age. We didn’t live as we are. We live for the older/younger.

When we grew older, we regret.

“If only I were younger” says the old folks.

“If only I’ve done that when I was young”

BUT there’s no point of return. We’re growing. We’re getting older. Nobody can escape aging. We were created that way. Unless you’re one of a kind like “the Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF AGING?!

By right, you shouldn’t. Because as you grow, you’re not as ignorant as before. If you remain 21, you’ll remain ignorant as you are at 21. You wouldn’t move forward. Don’t feel depressed and devastated when you grow old, thinking that you’re extremely useless because you can’t do anything but to depend on the maid/relative to clean you up, wipe your back or even to wipe your nose.

“It’s like going back to being a child again. Someone to bathe you, someone to lift you, someone to wipe you. We all know how to be a child, it’s all inside of us. For me, it’s just remembering how to enjoy it!” quote Mitch Albom’s deceased professor.

Youths are living their lives so miserably that they whine and complain over it. Some even have thoughts of killing themselves. Who wants to live everyday when you don’t know what’s going on in your life?

As you grow, you learn more. Aging is not about just decaying, but also gaining experiences. It’s a part of GROWTH. So, live it well.

How could envy comes to you when you see kids running around playfully without any worries at all when you were once there? In fact, we should all smile and say “it was all worthwhile to be there once upon a time. When I had all the fun in the world. I laughed for little thing. Did what I liked. Now that I am  ____ (according to your age), I shall create memories not to be forgotten when I grow older”

We should never live and also leave this world with regrets. Although sometimes we can’t help it. When that happens, acknowledge that you’re feeling regret and get it done. Then, gently let it go. We call it detachment (one of the most important value Buddha has ever taught). Don’t cling to it because nothing is permanent in this world.

Your hair will eventually turn white. Your wrinkles will eventually appear. Your reflex action would eventually deteriorate.

“If you’re always battling against getting older, you’ll never be happy, because it will happen anyhow”

Last but not least, “I am not depressed about aging, I am only depressed because I was born early,” says *Ken, 29, who’s still a bachelor.
